Top 10 Biggest Indian Openers At The Worldwide Box Office: Rajinikanth's Coolie Takes 7th Spot

Chennai, August 16 - In the opening day box office battle, superstar Rajinikanth has officially entered the all-time top 10 list with his latest blockbuster Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Released on August 14, the gangster action drama stormed the global box office with a record-breaking opening for a Tamil film, cementing Thalaivar's dominance even in the era of pan-India cinema.

The race for the biggest Indian opener has grown fierce over the years. It all began with SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), which not only redefined Indian box office history but also became the first Indian film to cross 100 crore and 200 crore worldwide on day one. The director later broke his own record with RRR (2022), which took global openings to another level.



In 2024, Indian cinema scaled unprecedented heights when Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2 – The Rule shook the industry with a 275 crore worldwide opening, almost touching the (still) unthinkable 300 crore mark. While Coolie didn't break into the top five, it still paved its path to history, delivering the biggest-ever Tamil cinema opening and ranking among the Top 10 Biggest Indian Openers of All Time.

The top 10 biggest Indian openers list is dominated by Telugu titles with six films, and the reason is the massive Pan India appeal, which began with Baahubali. The Tamil cinema too is making long strides with 2 films in the list, while Hindi and Kannada cinema have 1 film each among the top openers.

Looking ahead, the list may undergo a major shakeup with several upcoming juggernauts in the making. From Prabhas' Spirit, Fauji, The Raja Saab, Salaar 2, and Kalki 2 to Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana, Animal Park, and Dhoom 4, Shah Rukh Khan's King, Allu Arjun's AA22, SS Rajamouli's Gen63 (with Mahesh Babu), Yash's Toxic, Jr. NTR's Dragon, Rajinikanth's Jailer 2, and Vijay's Jana Nayagan, all these films carry the potential to rewrite box office history yet again.
